9:00-11:00 Business meeting
11:00-12:00 HT activity (Tea for all Thymes)
12:00-1:00 Lunch
1:30 – 3:00 Guided Walk at Habitat
We will begin our day at Amy’s home in Belmont, MA with a business meeting and horticultural therapy activity. Amy is a relatively new member of NEHTA and comes to the organization with a background in OT and developmental psychology. She was recently certified as an HTR and runs an HT program at Franciscan’s Hospital for Children. She also teaches at Lasell College and is a consultant at the Institute for Human Centered Design in Boston. She is currently on the Board of Directors of AHTA and is really interested in anything that combines HT and research. As an avid tea drinker, Amy will facilitate a discussion on the timeline of tea, its purported therapeutic values, and best of all, we will create our own special blends to take home and enjoy. Lunch will follow. PLEASE advise Amy of any food allergies or dietary needs.
Habitat is only a 10 minute drive from Amy’s so after lunch, we will caravan up to the sanctuary and enjoy a 1.5 hour guided docent walk specifically focused on plants of interest to hort therapy folks- herbs, plants for dyeing, and the likes. As the trails vary in incline, please wear sturdy walking shoes. If anyone has any mobility concerns, please let Lorraine or Amy know in advance so our guide, Barbara can plan the walk to meet our entire group’s needs.
A Description of Habitat
On Belmont Hill, just 6 miles northwest of downtown Boston, lies Habitat, an 88-acre urban oasis that has been devoted to environmental education since 1970. Over 2.5 miles of gentle trails wind through deciduous and evergreen forests, across meadows, around 2 ponds, and along a wetland containing a vernal pool. The visitor center is a brick Georgian-style mansion where monthly art exhibits can be viewed. Outside, there’s a pleasing and calming formal garden. The building and gardens can be reserved on weekends for weddings and other events.
